This specific term “man” was used to describe humanity as a whole. The males of HomoSapiens species were labeled as Wer. During the 13th century, man gradually replaced Wer as the term for an adult human male. That is because language was also going through a lot of changes during these times. Phonetics had taken a major place in human language. Whatever sounded tacky and primitive was replaced with more sophisticated and beautiful language. Man was used both for males and as an expression for the entire human species.
